how a klog works

A Klog is an ordinary blog, but it is built with children and parents in mind.

A blog is a web log or diary, an online place to share your thoughts.  You can invite discussion from your audience if you wish.  There are a plethora of plug ins that add functionality to a blog.

For a Klog, we create a space where a child can write their thoughts. Family and friends can write and draw comments. Content is regulated by parents.

how it came about

My five year old son, Lance, started writing, sounding words and putting sentences together.  Like many kids his age, he is a little obsessed with computers.  So, I thought about creating a blog for him.

The pros were that he would practice writing on his own terms.  He would have a creative outlet.  He could visit archives to see what and how he had written in the past.  He would be proud of his improvement.

Another big plus was providing him with more family and friend activity.  Our busy lives mean we don’t have as much contact with family and friends as we would like.  As adults we can email, phone, Facebook, text but children don’t have these devices at their disposal.  Lance’s grandparents love using his Klog.

Cons were how to minimise the alarming issues associated with children online.  Parents have the right to choose when and how our children receive certain information.  So …

posts

Your child’s posts are published online after you approve them.  This way you can supervise the written work.

comments

Comments from others are published online after you approve them.  This way, you can monitor the site’s content.

Comments can be drawn or typed.  This allows younger children, who cannot write, to ‘comment’ on your child’s Klog.  Adults also love this feature.

custom colours

Your child’s Klog will reflect their favourite colours and sense of style.  These options can also be changed at a later date.

photos

Photos are optional.  As parents, you can post photos and include them in your child’s Klog, if you like.

other images

Each post your child writes can have an image assigned to it.  Many popular characters have a library of images that are free for personal use.  Your Klog library can be stocked with your child’s favourite characters, subject to licence and availability.  You can also upload your own images.
